From Script to Storyboard in 10 Minutes

Pre-production is often viewed as the necessary, unglamorous paperwork of filmmaking. It is the phase where you break down your script line by line, estimate camera angles, sketch stick-figure storyboards, and try to communicate your vision to your crew before you even step on set.

It is a painstaking process. But it is also the phase where the movie is actually conceptualized. Today, we are going to walk through how RanGen Studio takes this grueling multi-week process and compresses it into a highly creative, 10-minute workflow.

Phase 1: The Ingestion

It all begins with the text. Whether you use Final Draft, Celtx, or just a plain text document, the first step is bringing your story into the studio.

When you paste your script into RanGen, the system doesn't just read the words; it analyzes the structure. It automatically identifies scene headings (sluglines), action lines, character dialogue, and transitions. It breaks your linear text down into manageable, modular scene blocks.

Phase 2: Defining the World

Phase 3: The Setup

With the script broken down and the world defined, we enter the scene. Our system reads the first slugline: EXT. NEON ALLEYWAY - NIGHT.

RanGen automatically pulls the "Neon Alleyway" location data from the World Bible. It sees Elias in the action lines and pulls his character data. It then presents you with a Master Setup console.

Here, you, the director, lock in the staging. You confirm that Elias is standing in the center of the alley. You generate the master shot. Phase 4: Rolling Coverage
